The WA State Chapter of the APDA joins collectively with other chapters nationwide in underwriting research into the cause and cure of Parkinson's disease. We proudly participate in supporting six Advanced Centers for Parkinson Research, three fellowships and 15 research grants in the 2000-2001 fiscal year.
Through the APDA's Scientific Advisory Board's review process, we are assured that funded projects are timely and appropriate, non-redundant, performed by qualified scientists and that they build on current scientific findings.
The APDA's historical commitment to critical research is demonstrated through their affiliation with recent Nobel Prize winners in medicine. Three researchers were awarded the coveted Nobel Prize through their discoveries about how messages are transmitted between brain cells—work that has paid off for the treatment of Parkinson's disease and depression. Dr. Arvard Carlsson with the University of Goteborg in Sweden was a prior winner of the APDA's Fred Springer Award, an award recognizing the contributions made to the advancement of knowledge about the disease. Dr. Paul Greengard is with the Rockefeller University in New York and was a former member of the APDA's prestigious Scientific Advisory Board. We are excited about their work—together with the third recipient, Dr. Eric Kandel of Columbia University—in advancing the understanding of Parkinson's disease.
